Choosing Affordable Accommodations

After eight long hours of driving, we finally reached DC. I was super excited as this was my first time visiting the city. I am a bit of a hotel snob, and three to five-star hotels are a must! We stayed at the George Hotel located in the George Washington University area. Chile! Let me tell you, this hotel exceeded my expectations! Talk about a gorgeous room! When my girlfriend and I entered the room, we were in heaven! The room was so beautiful I could have stayed there for the entire trip and never left. To think we had all of that luxury for roughly $100 per night.

Tip

The most significant traveling expense is lodging, but in Washington, DC, that doesn’t have to be the case. There are many affordable accommodations throughout the city that are perfect for budget-conscious travelers. Whether you prefer to stay in a hotel, hostel, or vacation rental, Washington, DC, has something for every traveler.

One option is to stay in a budget-friendly hotel, many of which offer basic amenities at a lower cost. The Days Inn by Wyndham Washington DC. on Connecticut Avenue, located just a few blocks from the National Zoo, offers rooms starting at $99 per night. Another option is the HI Washington DC hostel, which has dorm rooms starting at $34 per night and private rooms starting at $99 per night.

Vacation rentals, such as those found on Airbnb, can also be an affordable option, especially for families or groups traveling together. These rentals often have kitchens, allowing you to save money by preparing your meals instead of eating out every day.

Before booking any accommodations, be sure to check for deals and discounts. Many hotels and vacation rentals offer special rates for longer stays or booking in advance. By researching and being flexible with your travel dates, you can save even more money on your Washington, DC, lodging.

With affordable accommodations sorted, you can focus on exploring all that Washington, DC, has to offer without worrying about overspending.

My friends and I wanted to see all the beautifully crafted monuments that DC had to offer. We visited the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial. After that, we strolled to the Rainbow Pool, where we sat a spell, put our feet in the water, and relaxed for a while. The following day we visited the Lincoln Memorial. The Lincoln Memorial is a must-see attraction and was at the top of our things-to-see list, and of course, we went to the White House to take pictures. All of these attractions were free! The best things on a budget are free!

Consider purchasing a city pass or bundle deal if you plan on visiting multiple attractions. These passes often offer discounted rates and can save you money in the long run. Alternatively, look for free attractions such as the National Mall, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Smithsonian Museums.

If you’re interested in visiting a paid attraction, check if they offer discounted admission on certain days of the week or during off-peak times. Many museums and galleries offer free admission on specific days or during certain hours, so check their websites before planning your visit.

Another way to save money on attractions is by utilizing free guided tours offered by the city. The National Park Service offers free guided tours of the National Mall and other historical sites, while DC by Foot Tour company offers pay-what-you-wish walking tours of the city.

Eating on a Budget

In a city filled with so many options for dining, eating on a budget in Washington, DC, may seem like an impossible feat. However, with some planning and research, indulging in delicious meals without breaking the bank is more than achievable. My friends and I chose to eat light for breakfast and lunch so that we could splurge on dinner. One of the dinner options we decided on was the District Commons, which unfortunately has closed due to the Pandemic; every morsel was delicious. The drinks and atmosphere were superb, and the pricing was just right. It’s sad to see great establishments close due to unavoidable circumstances. Hopefully, in the future, they will be able to reopen.

Tip

One of the best ways to save money on food in the city is by exploring the abundance of food trucks and farmer’s markets throughout the area. Not only are these options affordable, but they also provide a unique and authentic culinary experience. Head to Farragut Square or the Eastern Market to taste DC’s best street food.

Another budget-friendly option is to opt for lunch instead of dinner at restaurants. Many restaurants in the city offer lunch specials that are significantly cheaper than their dinner prices. Plus, you’ll still enjoy the same delicious food at a fraction of the cost.

If you prefer to cook your meals, check out local grocery stores like Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods for affordable and fresh ingredients. And remember to utilize your hotel’s complimentary breakfast option to start your day on the right foot.
